History detectives,  get ready to dive into the exciting world of the Wampanoag Indians! This is where your adventure begins.

First, you will be divided into teams of 4 to begin your research on the Wampanoags. While in your group, you will learn all the information you need to create your brochure and convince the mayor that the Wampanoags deserve the big exhibit at the new museum.

Once you are divided into your teams, you can begin your journey. A great way to organize the information that you have learned is in a chart. Here is a chart for you to use while researching (it is also included in the Resources section below):

WAMPANOAG INDIANS

WHO ARE THEY?

WHEN DID THEY LIVE?

WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT IN HISTORY?

The Wampanoag Indians are a group of Native Americans who were among the first people to live in the United States. In fact, they lived in New England (a group of states in the North East part of the U.S.) before the Pilgrims or any other explorer arrived. This page tells more about the Wampanoags:

A great place to learn all about the Wampanoags and the Pilgrims is this great site:

http://plimoth.org/education/olc/intro.html

Once you are in that website, you can read all about the everyday life of a Wampanoag:

http://plimoth.org/education/olc/wampanoag.html

Can you believe how different the everyday life of a Wampanoag is? Want to learn more? Here is some information on what the Wampanoags eat:

And on their clothing:

The Wampanoag Indians lived in what we now call Massachusetts, a state that is in the Northeast of the United States. Have you ever wondered what Massachusetts looked like to the Indians? Here is a great map that shows what it looked like then to the Wampanoags:

Ever wonder what their homes looked like? Here is a look at one:

The Wampanoags were here long before the Mayflower arrived in America. What was their life like before 1620, the year the Mayflower arrived:

What was it like when the Wampanoags met the English explorers who came to America? When did these two groups of people first meet? Here is a timeline that tells you all about how these two groups met, when they met, and what both the Wampanoags and the English must have been thinking at the time:

http://plimoth.org/education/olc/Point_of_View.pdf

Here is another timeline that describes the many meetings of the Wampanoags and the Pilgrims:

Of all the meetings between the Wampanoags and the English, the most famous meeting is the one that people call Thanksgiving. Although many people think they know what Thanksgiving was like, much of what you have heard is a myth (a myth is an imaginary or made up story about something or someone). Here is page that describes some of these myths:

Here is more about the actual first Thanksgiving:

http://plimoth.org/kids/homeworkHelp/building.php

If you scroll down to the middle of this page, you can find out who was at the first Thanksgiving:

Ever wonder what they really ate that day? Find out here:

The history of the Wampanoags does not end there. The Wampanoags are still alive and living all over the United States. Read about some of the Wampanoags of today:

http://www.bostonkids.org/educators/wampanoag/html/w-now.htm

Do you think the Wampanoags deserve a big exhibit at the new museum? Why should the mayor pick the Wampanoags for this honor? If the mayor does pick the Wampanoags, can you imagine what the exhibit would look like? Here is an example of what people might find at a Wampanoag exhibit:

Once you have finished your research, you can begin to work on your brochure. Be sure to include lots of pictures, maps, and graphics and make sure you use your best handwriting! Be as creative as you want with your brochure - all of the supplies you need are in the classroom and you will have plenty of class time to work on this project.
