Process

Now that you have chosen your partners, complete the steps below. Be sure to read through the entire Webquest before beginning to give youselves an overview of what is expected.

Part 1

1. Following my lead, you will each create a double-entry journal to take notes.

2. Read the following articles on bullying and then discuss them with your group. After your discussion, you need to add your thoughts to your journal. Be sure to include direct quotes from the article in column one and record your personal thoughts in column two.

     A. Ryan, Sandy Fertman "CRUEL INTENTIONS." Girls' Life 15.4 (2009): 68. Middle Search Plus. EBSCO. Web. 5 Nov. 2009.

     B. "No Bullies Allowed!." Time for Kids 15.6 (2009): 4. Middle Search Plus. EBSCO. Web. 5 Nov. 2009.

     C. Delsite Everett, Alison "BuLLied to death." Boys' Life 99.4 (2009): 38. Middle Search Plus. EBSCO. Web. 5 Nov. 2009.

3. Look at the two web-pages listed. Again, discuss with your group and then record your responses in your journals.

  1. http://kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/emotion/bullies.html

  1. http://stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov/kids/

4. Find at least two more sources (article or webpage) to read and discuss. Again, record responses in your journal.

Part 2

Using your notes and any additional sources, create a concept-web for bully and/or bullying. I will lead the class in a mini-lesson on how to create a concept-map in Inspiration. After the lesson, you may open the attached Bully Concept Map below.

Part 3

As a group, you will now create an advertisement (powerpoint presentation, poster, commercial, etc) to convince the rest of the school to stand up to bullies.

       a.  first, decide on what you want to say

       b.  then decide on how you want to present it

       c. be sure to include elements of persuasion previously discussed in class

These will be displayed and presented around the school, so use good judgement and quality persuasive techniques.

Part 4

The final piece will be to write a persuasive essay on how to prevent bullying at Dulles Middle. This is a writing test and will be done individually in class. Begin pre-writing now. You will be allowed to use your pre-writing and your journals on the day of the test.

The rubrics for the Double-Entry Journal, Persuasive Advertisement and the Persuasive Essay are attached below. Please review these before beginning each part.
