Hey, which way do we go now?

Let’s talk about directions. Do you know what a Compass Rose is? How about Cardinal directions? Let’s learn about them now!

A compass rose shows direction on a map.  The cardinal directions are North, South, East, and West. The N stands for North, the S stands for South, the E stands for East, and the W stands for West.  There are also intermediate directions that are between the cardinal directions. They are Northeast, Southeast Southwest and Northwest.

Now let’s have some fun learning about Directions!

Click on the link for the compass rose interactive games and follow the directions. When you have completed the activity continue with the lesson outlined for this section.

Let’s apply what we have learned by completing the Cardinal Directions worksheet in the resource section. Print and submit in class to be graded.

What are Symbols and Keys and what do they have to do with Maps?

A symbol is a picture on the map that represents something. On a Map a symbol represents an object. It may be a railroad, rest area or roads. To understand the symbols you need a Key. Maps use a key or a Legend to let you know what each symbol means. It shows you a picture of the symbol on the map and tells you what it represents.

Let’s have some fun as we learn about Map symbols and Keys!

Click on the Adventure Island Interactive game link below and follow the directions. When you have completed the activity continue with the lesson outlined for this section.

Want to go to Disney World? Well how do you get there from here?

It’s all about Longitude and Latitude!

If you want to know how to find a city or place how do you locate it? What if you want to tell a friend where Disney World is? You could say it is in the state of Florida, or in the city of Orlando. That might be help but to really help your friend know where Disney world is you need to give them the latitude and longitude.

So what is Latitude and Longitude?

Think of the globe as divided into sections. Some are east. Some go west. Others go north. Some are south. The lines that extend around the Earth horizontally are called lines of latitude. These lines measure how far north or South an object is on Earth. The lines that run vertically around the Earth we call Longitude. These are meridian. Latitude and longitude are measured as angular distance.
