After allowing the students to think about how they became the organism they are, dependent of the information provided from their two paretns, transition to the idea of how an organism could reproduce if only one parent is required.
What is ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION?- Handout provided will aid students in taking notes on important information and points made during the lecture.
- Show the Asexual Reproduction YouTube video attached below. The video shows bacterial reproduction, starting from a single cell, and increasing in number quickly.
- Important points to be made -
- Know examples of asexual organism - strawberries, Flowers, Fungi, Bacteria
- Understand concept of SINGLE PARENT reproduction
- Identical genetic code in each generation of division
Final Question: How different would the offspring of an organism that uses asexual reproduction be from its parent? This portion should take 10 minutes w/ discussion.
What is SEXUAL REPRODUCTION?
- Again, handout provided will aid students in taking notes on important information and points made during lecture.
- Show the Sexual Reproduction YouTube video attached below. The video shows a sperm cell meeting with an egg, providing the basis for the idea behind two parents.
- Important points to be made -
- Examples - Animals, Humans, Insects, Fish, and anything that uses egg/sperm reproduction.
- Two parents required
- Humans are the best example of sexual reproduction (students will be able to feel connected to this idea of reproduction).
- 50/50 genetic code gained from each parent.
- Cloning of these cells would make an individual grown
- Present the idea of mitosis to be covered next class.
Final Question: How does sexual reproduction account for why each person looks different, and has its own set of features and characteristics? How does this differ from that of a asexual offspring? This portion should take 10 minutes w/ discussion.
