Individual work
At first you will work individually. Each member of the team is supposed to focus on one particular area of interest, gather relevant information from the Internet and possibly use other resources, too. Choose one of these five issues:
1. History and development of the Council of the European Union
· The Treaty establishing the European Coal and Steel Community · The Treaty of Rome · The Merger Treaty · The Single European Act · The Treaty on European Union · The Treaty of Amsterdam · The Treaty of Nice · The Treaty of Lisbon
2. Legal status and members of the Council of the European Union
· Rules of procedure of the Council · Members of the Council · Council configurations
3. Organization and internal structure of the Council of the European Union
· Sessions and headquarters · Presidency · Secretary General · COREPER · Advisory committees
4. Functions and powers of the Council of the European Union
· adoption of the legislative acts · coordination of the Member States' policies · development of the common foreign and security policy · conclusion of the international agreements on behalf of the Union · adoption of the Union's budget
5. Decision making process in the Council of the European Union · normal majority of votes · qualified majority of votes · unanimity
Try to collect any additional materials you would like to use during your presentation. Apart from the Internet you may use other resources available to you, such as leaflets, books, newspaper articles. You should decide which pieces of information you encounter during your search will be particularly useful to your audience and therefore must be included in your final report. You should also create three slides.
Group work
After finishing your individual work, as a group you will decide which pieces of information will be included in your presentation and then create it collaboratively. A question and answer session by the teacher and students may follow the presentation
Points to remember:
· You are going to cope with a complex issue, so try to be concise and keep up to the point during your presentation. · Try to make your presentation appealing to the audience. · You are also to provide your audience with a list of useful contacts
Remember, you are not expected to give detailed information or summarise what you have read, in some cases you just need to provide the links to documents which can be downloaded.
