2. Each pairing will be assigned a complication related to cancer and or the treatment of cancer that is classified as an oncologic emergency.
3. You will communicate with each other by setting up planned meeting times outside of
the classroom to discuss how you will plan your strategy to fulfill the requirements for this assignment.
4. Utilize the resources that have been provided for you and are highlighted in this text. There are
resources that describe
oncologic emergencies in general context and some that are specific to the individual complication such as
hypercalcemia,
superior vena cava syndrome, syndrome of
inappropriate secretion of ADH,
tumor lysis syndrome,
spinal cord compression,
neutropenic sepsis disseminated intravascular coagulation
(DIC) and
cardiac tamponade.
5. When you have collected your information and completed your research you will develop a 10 to 15
minute
powerpoint presentation to share with your classmates. The presentation will incorporate the
the knowledge that you have gained from this learning exercise. The powerpoint should have a
minimum of 6, but no more than 10 slides. You will identify the
signs and symptoms of the assigned
complication,
the predisposing factors, the
common malignancies that are related to the
particluar complication, discriminate between a
structural vs. a metabolic emergency, identify
diagnostic tests including radiology and pertinent
labwork,
medicalinterventions and
symptom management and apply appropriate
nursing interventions.
6. You will be expected to complete this assignment over the next
4 weeks at which time you will be
selected in random order to present to the class, so the work must be submitted by then. Any
powerpoints that are not done because of time constraints will be presented the following class. Your
grade will be reflective of the collaborative and individual effort.
