First print off the worksheet provided in the Resources section at the bottom of the page. As you go along through the story, make sure you fill in the worksheet. Show all your work.

The day is May 13, 2025. You have the day off of work but your day is completely full with tasks to complete. Your alarm clock goes off, time to get out of bed. You get dressed and all cleaned up. You decide you better eat some breakfast before we start tackling today’s agenda. As your looking in the fridge, you notice that it is pretty empty. Grocery shopping is a must for today. You grab a banana and some yogurt and call it good. As your eating your breakfast you notice the bills on the table. You also notice the flyer for your upcoming party at work. You are responsible for bringing cookies for everyone.

You decide it's best to pay the bills first. You have a total of $600 in your checking account. Here's the list of bills you have to pay:

                           1) Rent:.........................$3oo
                           2) Electricity:...............
$25.50
                           3) Water/Garbage: ....
$27.95
                           4) Phone:......................$125.35

It's getting pretty close to lunch time. We better get grocery shopping soon. Open the map in the resources tab and find the best way to get to the grocery store.

We finally get to the grocery store. You gather a few of the necessities and now come across some cookies. You remember you have to bring cookies for the upcoming party. Should you buy them or make them?  You need to have enough so that everyone gets one. There will be 60 people at the party.

       A) Buy them:
Generic brand Chocolate chip cookies:  15 cookies per package......
$ 6.55
High Quality chocolate chip cookies:   15 cookies per package.........
$ 6.50

       B) Bake them:
The recipe makes 12 cookies per batch.
Cost of ingredients for one batch.................
$5.00

You finish shopping and checkout. The total of the items you bought, not counting the cookie items, is $34.67. Time to head home.

Time for lunch. You've been craving pancakes. The recipe you have makes 6 pancakes but you can only eat 3. You decide to reduce the recipe so it only makes 3.

            Pancake Recipe:
                                        1 cup Flour
                                        1/2 cup sugar
                                        2 Eggs
                                        1/4 Cup Milk
                                        3/4 Table Spoon Baking Powder

* This is not a real pancake recipe

The day was a success!!! You got your bills paid, grocery shopping done, and got the cookies covered for the work party! And the best part is that it's only noon! You have the rest of the day all to yourself!!!

Extra Credit:
You still need to make the cookies. Given the following recipe, figure out how much of each ingredient you will need to make enough cookies for everyone. Remember the recipe for one batch makes 12 cookies.

Recipe for one batch of cookies:

                            1 cup butter, softened
                            1 cup white sugar
                            1 cup packed brown sugar
                            2 eggs
                            2 teaspoons vanilla extract
                            3 cups all-purpose flour
                            1 teaspoon baking soda
                            2 teaspoons hot water
                            1/2 teaspoon salt
                            2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
