Before you begin your quest be sure you have the worksheet handed out in class or print one out below.
Step 1 : First I want you to read more about the definitions and purposes of the elements of design. I also want you to note that different artists call elements by a different name or include elements that we may not have specifically discussed. I recommend the website below but you are also welcome to search "elements of design" and read from a different website. Document the site on your worksheet and use the information you find to aid you in interpreting works of art.
Begin your quest for the elements at this site: The link is listed below as Elements of Design (Step 1). Fill out as much of your worksheet as possible before moving on to Step 2. Step 2 : When you are finished with Step 1 proceed to the following website. Listed below as Artspan Gallery (Step 2) * Read the websites purpose for artists and fill in blanks on your worksheet. * Artspan's purpose is listed on the Home page under the heading Artspan. Be sure you are noting words that you need to look up. There is a section on the last page of your handout to make note of these words. Follow the directions on your worksheet in order to discover new artists and their use of the elements to become accomplished artists. As you move through the site and explore the worlds of many different types of artists also document words of which you do not understand their meaning. List the words on your worksheet. Follow the instructions listed. You do not need to define all the words you do not know, just one or two. The rest of the words will aid me in leading a follow-up discussion after the class has finished the assignment.
Step 3: You are doing a great job. I hope you had fun looking at so much wonderful and inspiring artwork. I want you to also realize that creating fine art is only one aspect of being an artist. Artists come in many forms and each is called to a different way of expressing themselves through their own interests and talents. Proceed to step 3 in order to see what other careers are related to art. (Continue to create a vocabulary list of words that you do not know the meaning as you move through these sites)

After you arrive at this page you will see many career descriptions, pick one that you find as an interesting career option and google search that profession to read more about what a person in that career would be expected to do. Refer to you worksheet under Step 3 and answer the questions.
Step 4: Now that you have journeyed from the smallest parts of the art world to the real life uses of knowing about each then what else can we discuss? Let us discuss the impact this knowledge has on you personally. How can you embrace knowledge of the arts in your future ? How does art interact with you on a daily basis and what would life be like if we never used artistic thoughts to create ?
