Themes of the Harlem Renaissance

Process

cottoncb.jpg

1. You will work in groups of three to four researchers.

2. Decide which area each member of the group will focus on. Check the role description link below for a complete description of the task.

3. Research your specific art form and complete the graphic organizer for at least two artists, writers or musicians from your area. The graphic organizer is the second link. Download it to your computer and print it when complete.

4. As a group select a theme that you identify in more than one creative endeavor. You may need to consider tone and mood in your evaluation of the piece.

5. Create a power point presentation that addresses these questions.

  • What is a common theme found in the creative work of the Harlem Renaissance?
  • Identify the specific example of the theme in at least two areas: literature, poetry, art, and/or music.
  • How does the theme connect to what you have learned or know about the African American experience in this country?
  • Connect this theme to modern life in America. Is the theme still relevant for African Americans? Can the theme be applied to other groups or all Americans? Be prepared to offer examples.

You will need to search out various sources, but the following websites will get you started on your research.
