Put on your geographer’s hat and let’s learn about Rowayton, Connecticut!  Work with a partner and complete the activities in this Webquest page to locate your city on the state map and to learn about the natural versus man-made characteristics of your town.

1.     The town of Rowayton is located in the larger city of Norwalk.

2.     Do you know your cardinal directions yet?  If not, visit the following website to learn more:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/sysm/landscapes/highlands_islands/mapskills/compass/index.shtml#focus.

·      Be sure to hit NEXT at the bottom of the page to play a game using cardinal directions.  If you missed it, click on the link below.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/apps/ifl/scotland/education/sysm/landscapes/highlands_islands/quizzes/compass/quizengine?quiz=compass#focus.

3.     Knowing what you have just learned about cardinal directions, can you find Norwalk on the following map of CT?  NOTE:  Norwalk is in the South, West corner of Connecticut!

http://www.dotdata.ct.gov/iti/master_iti.html.

4.     Using the same map above, can you describe to your partner where some of the other cities in Connecticut are in relation to Norwalk.  For instance, Bridgeport is NW of Norwalk.  Take turns asking your partner to describe where other cities in Connecticut are in relation to Norwalk using cardinal directions.

5.     Now let’s take some time to learn a little bit about man-made and physical characteristics of a town.  Go to the resources section at the bottom of this page and click on Resource 1 called “Natural versus man-made characteristics.”

6.     Take some time to listen to natural versus man-made sounds found in the following u-tube video.  Can you and your partner determine which sounds are natural and which are man-made?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h12GOr-YdRg.

7.     Now that you know what natural and man-made characteristics are, complete the worksheet in the resources section called “Worksheet: Natural or Man-made.”

You have finished the geography portion of this WebQuest!  Please place the natural vs. man-made worksheet into you WebQuest Portfolio folder that will be turned into the teacher at the end of the WebQuest.
