1. Each of these poems was written using a series of striking specific images about the person’s neighbourhood. For each poem write a list of those striking images that pop into your mind as you read the poem.
2. What defines your own suburb? Write a list of things that define your own community.
3. Write your own poem about your community.
Hint: Why not try a list poem?
Two examples of List Poems can be found in ‘Loneliness and the Cure There of’. They are both entitled ‘Loneliness’ and are on page 40.
These list poems use metaphor and simile to compare two things. Notice that they use very specific and unique detail.

Extension: Turn the person next to you into a list poem.
Part Three
View the video ‘HybridGraf’. This text has been produced by the artist Peter Polites. It is the story of a boys life in South-West Sydney. The story is told using sound and images. Students make up the story of this boy’s life based on the film clip. You can write the biography as a poem, feature article or short story.
