Ms. K’s father always told her that she could do anything if she worked hard. She believed him. Did you know that you can experience college-level work and earn college credit while in high school? Ms. K tested into her high school’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program in 9th grade. By her senior year of high school, she earned 9 college credits by completing AP examinations in English Literature and Composition, History, and Calculus. Going to college was going to be expensive so Ms. K applied for numerous federal grants and scholarships. By thinking that she could, and working hard, Ms. K won enough scholarship monies to pay for all 4 years of her college tuition!
In 1989, she attended CSU San Bernardino where she studied Mass Communications. She loved to write and dreamed of becoming a journalist one day. During her junior year, she was selected to participate in the National Student Exchange Program. Through this program, she attended Southern University, one of the largest Historically Black College & Universities (HBCU), in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She learned a tremendous amount about African American literature and her culture.
Ms. K always enjoyed helping people and chose to work in a variety of service positions including: retail sales, customer service, parent liaison, police dispatcher, and library security. Ten years after completing her first degree she felt that something was missing. She began to think of her interests and wanted to discover a career that she would love. She always loved reading books to her son, writing, and researching, so naturally she decided to become a Librarian. She was accepted into San Jose State University’s School of Library and Information Science and again was able to attend, for free, with the help of federal grants and scholarships. In order to graduate, all library students had to successfully complete the culminating essay process where you are required to write two 20-page essays on a given topic. She successfully passed her essays the first time! In 2005, she earned a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science. She was the 2nd person in her family to receive a graduate degree!
Ms. K found her home at Monarch Academy in 2007. She is truly a lifelong learner. She was accepted into the graduate program at the University of Phoenix. She worked as a librarian and middle school teacher during the day and attended fulltime classes at night. She just graduated in May 2007 with a Master’s Degree in Education and a single subject teaching credential in language arts. This summer she took a class in children’s literature and read over 50 books!
What has Ms. K learned in her studies? She knows that she is capable and that she can do anything that she sets her mind to. She knows that she will always be a student and will always research about all of her curiosities. She loves technology and is determined to discover new ways to incorporate the use of video, sounds, images, and blogs in her lessons. She has learned that knowledge is power and can never be taken away.
My Personality
MY TOP 10 TRAITS
Conscientious
You feel it's important to work according to a plan and finish every task, to do things correctly and thoroughly.
You are not the kind of person who abandons a project before finishing it, or slacks off when you've lost interest.
Organized
You like to think a task through before you embark on it. If it's the slightest bit complicated, you make a list (even if it's only in your mind) and methodically work your way through it. When you have a goal in mind, you're not satisfied until you reach it.
You are not one of those people who ignore the details, and you don't understand how anyone can get anything accomplished without thoughtful planning ahead of time.
Aesthetic
You appreciate art, beauty, and design; you know that they are not superficial but absolutely crucial to living the good life. You have good taste, and you're proud of it. Those with a high score on the "aesthetic" trait are often employed in literary or artistic professions, enjoy domestic activities — doing things around the house — and are enthusiastic about the arts, reading, and travel.
You don't think it's pretentious to be moved by art and beauty. You're not one of those who believe it doesn't matter what something looks like as long as it does its job.
Competent
You strive to master everything you undertake. You tend to learn quickly and do not shy away from challenges.
You are not a "que sera sera" type of person, nor do you go easy on yourself when attempting to master a new skill or get a job done.
Curious
You like to get to the bottom of things. You're not content knowing what someone did; you want to know why they did it.
You don't simply take things as they are and move on; you're not content skimming along on the surface; you don't feel you're wasting time by digging for the meaning of things.
Assertive
You behave in a confident and forceful manner, take charge of the situation, raise your hand in class, stand up for what you think is right, and lead others. Among those who have a high score on the "assertive" trait, many have jobs in which they are valued for their organizational skills as well as their talent for supervising others.
You are not interested in fading into the woodwork, leaving everything to fate, taking more time than necessary to accomplish a task, or avoiding confrontation.
Understanding
You are willing to take the time to find out what's going on with other people, especially if they're in distress. You're a good listener, you don't criticize, and you offer unbiased, respectful, honest advice when it's requested. With a high score on the "understanding" trait, it is likely that you are enthusiastic about charitable work, helping others, and making the world a better place.
You don't feel the need to impose your standards on others or say things that, even though true, cause pain.
Focused
You know how to lock in on what's important. You quickly prepare yourself for a task, you don't procrastinate, and you don't let up until the job is done to your satisfaction.
You are the opposite of scattered. You don't procrastinate before starting a task, and you almost never lose track of what you're doing.
Innovative
You come up with a lot of ideas; if one doesn't work out, there's always another waiting in the wings. You often have interesting solutions to difficult problems. You're practically a one-person brainstorming session.
You are less interested changing the world than in dealing with things as they are. Unlike those who spend all their time trying to solve problems, you prefer to zero in on things that work and stick with them.
Creative
You are good at solving problems, coming up with original ideas, and seeing connections between things, connections that most other people miss. People with a high score on the "creative" trait often are employed in such fields as finance and scientific research, and enjoy avant garde and classical music as well as literary fiction and scholarly non-fiction.
You do not shun abstractions and concepts in favor of the concrete and tangible.
