Are you ready to go on a journey with Sarah as she learns to adjust to her new home in Kansas?  When Sarah Elisabeth Wheaton, of Maine, answers an advertisement in the newpaper to become a wife and mother for Jacob Whitting and his two children, Anna and Caleb, she first visits their farm before making a decision about staying.  Let's find out how Sarah feels about her family as well as how the Whittens feel about her.  Remember that sometimes the author of the book does not tell you everything.  They want you to figure out some things for yourself.  If you read carefully, you can figure out how Sarah is feeling by looking for clues in the story.
Then, you will use map skills to track Sarah's train journey from Maine to Kansas.  Find out about the many different landforms Sarah passes on her way from one region of the United States to another while reading map keys and map scales correctly.
After that, you will discover Sarah's favorite things from her old home in Maine as well as her new home in Kansas.  As Sarah learns to love the banty chickens, lovable lambs, and glowing goldenrod as much as her beloved seashell collection, you will help her organize information about her new environment on a bar graph.
Finally, you may put yourself in Sarah's shoes as she discovers her new surroundings in Kansas.  Go on a scavenger hunt to locate various organisms found in their native habitat on the prairie.
