The missions were established in Alta California during the 1700's by Spain to colonize their holdings in the New World.  The mission sites were chosen for their location along the planned trade route which would later be called "The El Camino Real".  In time these sites grew into many of the major population centers in what is now California.  The missions grew and flourished for many years, however when Mexico gained independence the missions rapidly declined.  Land and livestock were also sold or given to local pueblos and individuals.  When California became part of the United States the missions were returned to the Catholic church, but by then most were in a state of decay and ruin. These series of lessons will help students to become familiar with the development of how the missions came about.
