Introduction

The terrorist attack in New York City on September 11, 2001 was the catalyst for a war in the Middle East that is still going on today.  At the time, the American President, George W Bush, stated that the Afghanistan-based group, Al-Qaeda, were the masterminds of the attacks.  He also asserted that Iraq had connections to Al-Qaeda and therefore America and its allies, including Australia, sent troops to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2003 to find the perpetrators of the attacks and the weapons of mass destruction (WMD), or bombs, that were supposedly going to be used for further terrorism.

However, military intelligence from Iraq suggested that there was no threat of WMD.  America was later found to have interpreted this military information to suit their own purpose which was to justify them going to war in Iraq.  As we get closer to the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, war still prevails in Iraq, and thousands of troops as well as thousands of innocent civilians have died as a result.  The media coverage of the war, particularly in Iraq, was immense.  Journalists and photographers were embedded with various groups of the military, giving us in America and other countries, access to information we would normally never have seen.  We were bombarded with images, video and articles that took up front pages of the newspapers and headlines for months.

You will gain an understanding of media literacy through this Webquest's activities that encourage critical analysis of visual media, as well as discussion and debate.  This Webquest will open your eyes to the role that media has in shaping and affecting your views and understanding of this event and others; but also to consider how these viewpoints and perspectives shape and affect historical accounts and sources.
